TUNISIA
Tunisia has a rich cultural history, ever since Antiquity. The Carthaginian Empire, Rome's arch enemy, was centered in Tunisia. Tunisia is a beautiful African-Mediterranean country, which offers a combination of beach and desert holidays, as well as cultural visits to old medinas and roman ruins.
Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia located on a large Mediterranean Sea gulf (the Gulf of Tunis. Its ancient medina is a World Heritage Site. The Baths of Antoninus or Baths of Carthage are the largest set of Roman thermae built on the African continent and one of three largest built in the Roman Empire.
The amphitheater at El Djem was built by the Romans around 238 and was mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races. Until the 17th century, it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan.
