SLOVAKIA

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe and Bratislava is its capital.
Slovakia has an incredible number of castles. The first written mention of Slovakia’s oldest castle Devín dates back to the year 868. Spis Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the ten largest castles in the world. Altogether, Slovakia has as many as 220 castles and castle ruins ! And you can add around 400 chateaus to the list.
Specific samples of sacred architecture in Slovakia are the wooden churches. Among the oldest are the Gothic wooden churches (for example Hervartov, Tvrdosin). The “articled” churches are other type of wooden churches (for instance Lestiny, Kezmarok, Hronsek). Wooden churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area, which were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008.
