FRENCH POLYNESIA

Austral Archipelago -

Rurutu island

The volcanic island of Rurutu is located 150 km east of Rimatara, the nearest island, and 572 km south of Tahiti. The geology of Rurutu is original as 12 million years ago, the island is the product of the MacDonald hotspot. For more than 10 million years, its subsidence led to the process of setting up an atoll, but a little over a million years ago, the island passed over a second hot spot, Mount Arago, which raised it an additional 150 metres. The island is now surrounded discontinuously by raised coral cliffs, making it a makatea, which are riddled with caves lined with concretions.
