NEW ZEALAND - South Island

East Coast - Kaikoura - Whale Watching

Kaikoura is a town on the east coast and located on State Highway 1 at 180 km north of Christchurch.
Kaikoura is now famous for whale watching and a popular tourist destination.  Sperm Whales can be seen year-round and close to shore as they congregate there because the 3km deep Kaikoura Canyon runs right up against the coast creating a rare system of sea currents that sustain an incredibly rich marine food chain. Dolphins are also very common, as well as otters, seals and seabirds.
