KYRGYZSTAN

Landlocked and mountainous, Kyrgyzstan borders Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the southeast. Bishkek is the capital city with the international airport.
It is a rugged Central Asian country along one of the Silk Roads, the ancient trade routes between China and the Mediterranean. The Tian Shan mountains, which surround the old caravan route and dominate the country, are home to snow leopards, lynx, horses and sheep. Landscapes are magnificents with lakes, mountains and and typical yurts camps.
Annexed by Russia in 1876, it achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It has the most liberal tourist visa policy in Central Asia and one of the more progressive post-Soviet governments in the region.
