Elephant Island

Elephant Island is an ice-covered mountainous island (60km long and 40km wide) with chinstrap penguins rookeries. The island is most famous as the desolate refuge of Ernest Shackleton and his crew in 1916 after their ship "Endurance" was crushed in pack ice. They spent 135 days on Elephant island while Shackleton and a small party set off on another journey to South Georgia to get a rescue ship.
